Our September “United Paints of America Show” is only two weeks away. We hope you are making plans to attend!! Be sure and thank Donna and Bob Broome for their sponsorship of the patches.

We sure love those Stall Reservations we get on line! We have 142 stalls reserved as of today. If you haven’t reserved your stalls, please do so. We are excited to see some new names come through. If this is your first DPHC show, please let us know and we will assign a “mentor” to you to help you get acquainted.

Would you like a free T-Shirt with the patriotic logo on it? We’ll have them in red and blue and the first 100 exhibitors to sign up for the show will get one free. The earlier you sign up, the better the size selection!

Nominations for the 2011 board and officers are being received. Any one want to throw their name in the hat? Just email Cindy Vaughn with your nominations, suggestions as she is our elections chairperson. Her email is: evfarrier28@embarqmail.com Here are your current board members and officers: Kim Evans, President, Cindy Vaughn, VP, Terry Giles, Secretary, Treasurer, Ted Evans.
Board Members: Kim Griffth, Linda Lewis, Abbey Turner, Ed Craig, Lisa Hebert, Eric Vaughn. Ed Craig and Lisa Hebert are on the first year of a 2 year term.

Do we have any APHA youth members that would like to go to the youth leadership conference in Nashville? Any parents want to attend as well? I have spoken with Shelly deBarbanson, our APHA Youth coordinator and she has a great speaker planned and is working on some activities in the Nashville area.

Would youth members be interested in fundraising to help defray expenses? AHPA is raffling off a 2010 New Holland rustler utility vehicle at $50 each with half that amount going back to the youth. We’ll make this a unique opportunity for each of our kids and for each ticket they sell for $50, $25 of that will go on an account for them. The money they raise can either go toward fees for the APHA Leadership conference or toward a DPHC show. To see the application that needs to be filled out to attend the leadership conference go to http://www.ajpha.com/leadership/10AjPHAConvForm.pdf. Amanda Sarbury and Tawny Cox went last year and want to attend again this year. We would love to see more from Florida attend. Please email if you would like to attend and I’ll discuss it in more detail with each of you. There is no time to linger on this as the deadline to send in the application is due September 1, and if you want to raise money toward the trip, I’ve got to get your raffle tickets to you.

We would like to have a youth meeting on Friday night at 6 PM. We’ll have pizza there to encourage attendance – parents welcome as well. Kate Waterford is going to head this up and wants everyone to know that you DO NOT have to be exhibiting to come and be a part of the youth group. You can tell them to contact Kate at either (813) 220-6056 OR h2ofordinc@h2oford.com if they have any questions.

Don’t forget! We have a patriotic theme for the September 11,12, show and will have a Chinese Auction which is a combination of auction and raffle for wonderful gift baskets. Free stalls, custom clothes, beautiful new bits, banding, braiding, custom stall signs, portrait painting of your horse and all sorts of horse related items are packaged within the baskets. It’s not too late to donate items either. Just let me know if you would like to contribute. Remember, in a Chinese Auction bidding is done by ticket. Each participant buys a certain number of tickets for a set price, then uses those tickets to "bid" on a variety of donated items on "auction." They can bid as many tickets as they wish on each item they're interested in, usually by depositing the tickets in a container assigned to that item. Rather than going to the highest bidder, though, as it would at a regular auction, the item goes to the person whose ticket is drawn, at random, from the container. We need a person or two to sell tickets for us – any volunteers? Remember, the money from this auction will go to a non-profit therapeutic riding program that supports wounded American Veterans here in Florida. This helps us make our club eligible for APHA’s Gold Club award.

October 9 and 10 is a Combined Paint Pinto Show at the Tampa Fairgrounds and is the annual Harvest Moon show put on by our Pinto friends. Rumor has it that there will be great prizes.

The November show will be a one-day Paints only show, just Saturday, November 20, at the Tampa Fairgrounds. We’re calling it the “Ben Franklin Show” as it will only cost you $100 if you go in one Open Class. That’s everything – stalls, judges fees, office fees, everything. What a deal!!!!! Tell all your friends with Paint Horses to come for this affordable and fun one day show. More to come on this……

December will once again be the Zone 9 show – 4 judges at Canterbury. We have even less stalls this year than last and ran out so please be thinking ahead. The stalls will once again be prepaid.

We’re already thinking about 2011and have decided to hold our January show in Tampa. It will be on the corresponding dates we had this year - January 21,22 and will replace the State Fair show and include Pinto classes as well. And yes – you’ll still get free Florida State Fair Tickets.

More to come…..

Another great show as a result of great exhibitors! The May Mane event was awesome. Classes ran quickly and smoothly thanks to the promptness of our exhibitors and the urgings by our announcer to get to class on time.

Thanks again Sabrina SanFilippo for sponsoring the patch that every exhibitor received!

A real highlight of the show was the ice cold watermelons donated by Bobby Matos and her family. The melons were such a refreshing break on Saturday. Thanks Bobby!!!

The requirements for eligibility for Paint high point are on every single show bill and on our website (www.dixiephc.com) under By-Laws and Standing Rules. Please remember that at our Paint shows, our standing rules require that in order to win a high point or reserve high point, an exhibitor “Must show in category halter and one category riding class to be eligible for division high point award”. This is a standing rule has been in effect for every single show since the January show of 2006. To change such a rule would require a majority vote of the DPHC board.

A BUNCH OF FLORIDA HORSES are going to the World Shows and we all want to wish all our Florida exhibitors and club members that are participating in the World Pinto Show (June 8-19) and World Paint Show (June 23-July 3) the very best. Do you know both organizations offer a “live feed” of the events so you can watch your favorites perform? Just go to each website once the show begins and there will be a link you can click on to watch.

Our next show on September 11-12 will be dedicated to those that were victims of the 9-11 tragedy in New York and our men and women that are serving in our armed forces today. The proceeds from our Chinese Auction will got to one or both of the programs we have found that support “Horses for Hero’s” here in Florida. The patches for the show came in yesterday and they are fabulous. Donna and Bob Broome, our patch sponsor, will be so proud.

If you told me at the show that you were planning to participate by bringing a basket for the auction and didn’t send it in an email I might not remember, so please send me something in writing as well. It would be soooo appreciated.

A few of the T-Shirts we’re planning on giving out in September were printed up and on display in the office so we hope you saw them. Our plan is to give one to every exhibitor. We’ll be asking for your sizes and color requests around August and if you want more than one, they’ll be $10 each. The red shirts have the logo on the front and the navy blue shirts have the logo printed on the back. The shirts you saw in the show office are going in a picnic basket with a patriotic 4th of July theme and will be auctioned off at the APHA workshop next weekend in Grapevine, Texas. The basket is a contribution from the Dixie Paint Horse Club to the APHA Youth Scholarship Fund.

Speaking of workshop…Mary Ellen James, Craig Burkhard and I are your representatives, please let us know if you have issues you would like us to represent.

At our Membership meeting on Friday those in attendance voted to move forward with the November 20-21 show at the Tampa Fairgrounds. That’s going to be a single fee show. We’re not sure what that single fee will be as we have to tweak the figures but exhibitors will pay the single fee or if you only go in a couple classes, you will be charged whichever is less. Call it affordable practice for the December show in Canterbury! We are making plans for various activities since we will have a shorter show bill and will keep you posted. Got anything you want to suggest? Just let us know. We aim to please.

Happy Trails!!

Looks like the Paint/Pinto Combined Show in Tampa this weekend will be TERRIFIC!!! This show is being put on by the Florida Pinto Association and is going to have a terrific turnout.  I see that Barbara Lamphere has posted on Facebook that 172 stalls are now reserved at the facility.  If you have any questions be sure and look up Michele Franz, Florida Pinto Association President, Amanda Palmer, VP, Sami Ray, Secretary or Lee Kidd, Treasurer.    The FPtHA website is www.fptha.com. Remember, paint points at this show count toward year end awards for DPHC

Looking for a hotel? Crown Plaza at the corner of MLK and I-75 has rates of $80 per night if you book on line.  If you’re looking for a full service hotel that allows pets, these are pretty nice accommodations.  That’s where we put our DPHC judges up and the Crown Plaza picks them up and delivers them back to the airport saving our club rental car fees.

Wait till you see the patches that the Florida Pinto Horse Association is providing us with at this show.  They are not only BEAUTIFUL but they IRON ON!!!!  No excuses now for not having that new patch on your jacket.

Don’t forget the DPHC Paint/Pinto Combined Show in May which will also be at the Tampa Fairgrounds.  Our theme?  The May Mane Eventand here’s the logo sponsored by Sabrina SanFillippo.  Please thank her when you see her.

Denim Jackets for Dixie Youth:  If you are or have a youth that has exhibited at two DPHC shows this year (January and March) and do not have a club denim jacket, just let us know what size and we’ll order.  We will have them to give you at the DPHC May Combine Paint Pinto show (also in Tampa).

Talk about a GREAT idea!  Look what Pinto is giving out!! Don’t want a ribbon…take a cone in your winning color - a blue ribbon or blue cone for first place – second place is red cone, third is yellow.  How cool is that!!!  Practice Cones for patterns!!!!

Hope to see everyone this weekend.

The weather even cooperated.  Lots and lots of our great Florida sun and although we started out cold in the early AM, by mid day people were in tank tops.

So now onto the next show!
Our next show that will count toward our year end points will be in Tampa, April 10th & 11th, 2010, at the Florida State Fairgrounds. The show is put on by the Florida Pinto Horse Association and supported by DPHC.
For stall reservations contact Barbara Lamphere at barbara.lamphere@att.net , or call 813-971-7143.  Be sure and visit their website for more information and a show bill www.ftpha.com
FPtHA is sponsoring the patch for the April Show.  The Florida Pinto Association title for the April show is “Spring Fling” and here’s the artwork. What a beautiful patch it will be!
Pinto would also like to invite everyone to their general membership meeting that will be held on Saturday 4-10-10 under the Pavilion at 5:00 PM or 30 minutes after the conclusion of the show.  Also, don’t forget to get your Pinto memberships in.  You’ll get a free “T-Shirt” when you join Pinto!!!!

We have sponsors lined up for May – the May Mane Event will be sponsored by Sabrina San Filippo.  September will be sponsored by Bob and Donna Broome and the theme will be patriotic. We have one person thinking about a sponsorship and they are partial to sea horses and we can handle that.  That leaves two shows that need sponsors.  Don’t be timid.  Call me if you are interested.  The patches are really catching on.  Even our judges are asking for them!

Pinto has come up with another great idea for the April show that everyone is going to love.  Instead of ribbons, winners will be able to pick
up “cones” in the appropriate color (ribbons will still be available as well).  Just think…everyone will have enough cones to do their patterns!  No more soda cans, fly spray bottles or coffee cups as markers!

Thanks to everyone that participated with our Pot Luck Dinner.  The food was fabulous and here are a couple of pictures to prove it.  Jennifer Goldstein and I made sure there was plenty of meat and got ribs and chicken from the Newberry Bar BQ.  Jennifer and I can attest to the fact that when you ride, it’s hard to cook!   The jalapeño poppers that Bobby Matos’ husband grilled were a big hit as was the Taco bar done by Dubin farms.

Ruth Benfield made a generous donation to the club.  She gave us 16 beautiful Longaberger Baskets.   These baskets are all handmade here in the US and are considered collectables by many.  We’ll be finding a way to “repurpose” them so look for some unique gifts from our club.

Here are your Top Ten Winners 2010 March Magic DPHC Show.  Each winner got a visor or a hat that shouts out “DPHC TOP 10”.

March 2010

We’re at 175 stalls reserved so we are expecting a great show in Gainesville this next weekend.  It looks like the weather will also be cooperating with the weather man predicting great day time temperatures and lots of Florida sun.  We’re real happy about the 0% rain prediction!!!!!

Our Pot Luck Dinner last year for this show was a smashing success.  We’ve heard they’ll be a Taco bar, corned beef and cabbage, pasta salad, pot roast, lasagna, Bar BQ, deserts, brownies and cakes.  Please email me if you know what you’re bringing as some folks are waiting to see what we need.  Traveling a long way?  There’s the Newberry Bar BQ (352) 472-7260 that’s less than two miles away.  Publix is always ready to help and there’s one on the way to the show grounds at 14130 W Newberry Rd, Newberry, FL 32669-2759, Phone: (352) 332-5114

Two golf carts are available to rent at the Canterbury facility.  They are $60 a day.  Contact Wendy Low at: (352) 472-6758

If you are arriving early, the stall assignments will be faxed to facility early Wednesday morning so they will be posted when you arrive at the front entrance.

Shavings will need to be ordered once you arrive and they will be delivered to your stalls.

Prizes are what you asked for
so that’s what you’re getting.  Check out the visors for top 10 in each division, (don’t like visors – we have some hats as well) the shirts for the first 100 that enter and the travel mugs for the circuit awards.  Due to a printer error – they’ll be some additional shirts we will be giving away as well.

The patches will match the rest of the theme and are sponsored this month by Jennifer Goldstein and JG Painted Acres.

RV spots are on a first come first serve basis.  There are plenty of slots that you can pull into but if you want a particular spot, get there early.

The trail warm-up will be held on Friday as usual.  We hope to get it set up by 3:30 PM and it will run roughly till 6 PM.   We are looking for a couple of volunteers to man this event and collect the $10 per 10 minute fees.  Just email me if you are willing to help.

The Boot Race is back by popular demand.  No experience necessary for this event.  Open to youth only, we’ll conduct it in conjunction with our pot luck dinner.

The Paint Horse Journal did a fabulous job of featuring our wonderful Paint Horses owners and businesses in Florida.  We can’t thank them enough for the wonderful stories and pictures of our great horses here in Florida.

A great BIG THANKS to Jennifer Goldstein and JG Painted Acres for their donation to the club towards the cost of the ad.  That kind of support is so appreciated by us all.

Host Hotel:   The La Quinta Inn in Gainesville located just on the east side of I-75 is a pet friendly hotel with a Canterbury horse show rate of $63 per night.  Their number is (352) 332-6466.

______________________________________________

The stall count today is 135 and we have 18 days till the show.  Since stalls are limited to 190, be sure and get your reservations in early.  As we are not requiring Pre-Paid stalls, please help us by canceling ASAP if you change your mind and decide not to come.  We hope to fill every stall like we did at our December 4 judge show.  Going into the show last year the stall count was 183, so don’t get left out.

Judges for this show are:  Terry Wirthlin, Rod Safty, Mark McCarthy and John Briggs

Our “Pot Luck” dinner was such a success last year because of our generous and talented members that brought their best and favorite dishes.  We’ll be doing it on Saturday as we did last year.  Traveling a long way and can’t cook – don’t worry, there is a nearby Bar B Q place and Publix is right down the road.  We don’t want anyone to feel left out.  The club will provide the plates, napkins, utensils and drinks as we did last year.

Some food items I’ve heard are coming:  Lasagna, chicken and rice, chili, hotdogs, fried chicken, tossed salad, brownies, pound cake, etc.  If you’re bringing something, just Email me back what you will be bringing to the Potluck Dinner and we’ll start whetting everyone’s appetite.  And don’t worry if you change your mind on what you’re bringing.  It all seems to work out like Magic.

Speaking of Magic…Our theme for the March show is “March Magic”!  It made such a nice logo, we’ve decided to put it on some T-Shirts and give them away at the show for the first 100 people that sign up for classes.  The shirts will be black with the white logo.  If you will remember, we did that for the October Paint Pinto Show and everyone loved it.

Be sure and thank Jennifer Goldstein and JG Painted Acres for being our patch sponsor for this show.

We reinstituted the banner patches that say high point and reserve high point as we had several people request them at the January show.  They say they want to proudly display their performance on their jackets again this year.  For those folks that didn’t get their banners for January – we’ve ordered those for you as well so no one will miss a show for their jackets.

Circuit Awards and Top 10 Awards in each division will be given out at the March Magic show as well.

We’re looking for a patch sponsor for the Combined Paint/Pinto show in April that is put on by our Pinto friends.  We are also looking for a sponsor for our May patch for the Paint/Pinto combined show that Dixie puts on.  We have a theme for May and it is: The May Mane Event.  Cathi Wilson has become our resident artist and has several clever ideas.  If you are interested in either of those months let us know.

The September show falls right on September 11.  Bob and Donna Broome are going to sponsor that patch which will have a patriotic theme.

Remember last year we changed our fee structure to encourage everyone to go in as many classes as they could with the hopes that bigger classes would mean more people will attend our shows and more of our horses will get Superiors, ROM’s, etc. and more of our Florida folks will find themselves in the top zone position and the top 20 in their divisions with APHA.

Want to know how that worked out?  Look at these results for Zone 9.  It was a CLEAN SWEEP FOR FLORIDA HORSES!
Youth 13 – Under: Rachel Benfield # 1.
Youth 14-18: Avery Sinclair # 1,
Classic Amateur: Leslie Dentinger # 1
Masters Amateur: Abbey Turner #1
Novice Amateur: Terry Giles #1
Open – Rachel Benfield #1

Like we did last year, let’s start out Saturday morning by taking our horses in as many halter classes as we qualify for (and everyone qualifies for color classes!)  Let’s keep up that same level of support for all our halter classes and color classes this year as we did last.  How about all you Novice riders go back in the regular classes in your division, all you Amateurs, youth riders – and everyone who can, go back in Open classes; join us in the horsemanship class - it’s so much fun.  How about some of you open rider folks reciprocating and take your horse in a halter or color class! Let’s keep our Florida horses in the number 1 slots in our zone, let’s get those Championships and ROMs for our Florida horses.  It’s what sets our club apart.

02/2010

This show sure lived up to its title….Paint Horse Shows Make Us Smile!!! (Even the horses smile at a DPHC Show!!!!) We have so many good things to share – it’s hard to know where to begin! The show this past weekend surpassed all our expectations. Attendance was up, entries were up and never have we all felt so much great and positive energy. The nearly 4 inches on rain on Friday night and rain again Saturday morning did not daunt our hearty competitors whose positive attitudes made it sunny at all times in the pen. A big thank you to Abbey Turner as the patch sponsor!!!

We had 880 total entries… Yes, you read that right, 880 entries!!! There were 513 Paint, 226 Pinto and 71 entries in our training classes. There were 13 in the Amateur Mare class, 20 in the Amateur Gelding class, 18 in Aged Geldings, 17 in Youth Geldings, 20 in our Overo class and 19 in the Tobiano class. We had 18 classes with 4 or more points.

We are so excited to have Amanda Sarbury and Tawny Cox representing the Dixie Paint Horse Club at the AjPHA Leadership Conference in Colorado Springs, October 1-3. We all look forward to what they will bring back to our DPHC youth here in Florida.

It will be cash again for end of the year awards$$$ Those in attendance at the annual membership meeting gave us their opinion that the year-end high point winners should once again receive “checks” so they can come to more horse shows.

We hope everyone is looking forward to the Pinto Paint Combined Show that will be held at the Florida State Fairgrounds on October 10-11 and here is the beautiful patch sponsored by Traci and Todd Payne that ride with Erica Richardson. This show is sponsored by the Florida Pinto Association and includes a full slate of DPHC/APHA approved classes and will count toward DPHC year-end awards. We are providing the patches and a BIG SURPRISE!!!

Another horse show right around the corner! What fun we are planning for the October 10-11 Pinto Paint Combined Show at the Tampa Fairgrounds! Be sure and bring your best “bat-itude”.

STALL DECORATING CONTEST!!!

We’re hoping everyone will get in the Halloween mood and participate in our stall decorating contest even if you don’t think you have a GHOST of a chance. At the Tampa facility there are already boards on the top of the solid walls found by each stall where you can hang and staple stuff. Please don’t use any construction glues or anything that will damage the facility. No problem coming up with ideas for this! Think goblins, candy, wizards, pumpkins, black cats, brooms and bats. It’s going to be hard to have more fun than we did at the September show but we sure are going to try.

The theme for this show is “Harvest Moon” and the patch design is beautiful. Tracy Payne who rides with Erica Richardson is the sponsor of this patch. It’s going to look great on your jackets!

Don’t have a denim jacket? We’ll be glad to order you one. Our cost is $55 so that’s the cost to you. Just let us know what size. If you are a youth and got a late start, just come to two Dixie shows and you get your jacket for free. Dixie shows this year were in January, March, May, September and December.

Remember the surprise we told you about in our last newsletter? Well here it is!! We’re giving Dixie Paint Horse Club members that exhibit at the October show a free “T-Shirt” and this is what they will look like. The front of the shirt is the three horses talking, the back is them running. The design will be on bright orange shirts and the first 100 club members to sign up for their classes will get their shirts for FREE. We’re going to order the shirts in various sizes so your incentive to sign up early is so you will have your choice of sizes. If there are left over shirts, individuals may buy them $10 each.

We had such great comments about the refreshing water in the warm up area, that we’ll be sure and do it again. For this show we’ll have water and ghoul-aid at the gate.

We hope everyone gets into the “SPIRIT” of things at the show and plan on having a great time with great competitors and good friends.

Want to see the show bill for the October show? It’s available at www.fptha.com. In our continuing efforts to support our Pinto friends, you can make your stall reservations on the Dixie website www.dixiephc.com for the October 10th and 11th combined Pinto Paint Show to be held at the Tampa Fairgrounds. You may also reserve your stalls through Michele Franz via email at franzsfamily@msn.com or call 407-349-8855 or by calling Barbara Lamphere at 813-971-7143.5.Stall assignments will be the usual – first come – first serve.

You’ll also see on our website that we are taking reservations for the December show. However, those stalls must be prepaid. Directions are on our website.

We just got word from APHA.  Our December show ended up being one of the top 20 shows in the nation!  A lot of work went into that show but well worth the effort.  We’re hoping it will be even bigger next year.

Thanks to everyone for making the January show in Venice such a success.  Everyone loved the “Pennies for Points” patch that featured Randy Short as Abe Lincoln on the “Penny”.  Thank you again Patti and Randy for your sponsorship.
We had 493 Entries at the Venice show on January 23,24 and full point classes in a number of events and several classes with 15 each.  Action Snapshot www.action-snapshot.photoreflect.com  took some great shots as you see.  You can go to their website and view your photos from the show.  The Senior Hunter Under Saddle class had 22 show in that class.

There’s more than one way to wear your patches!

Here’s the high point winners from the show that all received $40 gift certificates to the APHA store:

The “Welcome DPHC Members” cake was enjoyed by all.  However, no cake could possibly thank our members for the wonderful support they gave the club this past year.  We wish that everyone could have come to our annual meeting on Saturday night.  We were so thrilled with the turnout of over 75 folks and all the positive feedback.  We are indeed blessed with great folks here in Florida.

The March Magic 4 Judge Show is coming up fast.  We’ll be at the Canterbury/ Newberry facility west of Gainesville again this year.  Jennifer Goldstien of JG Painted Acres is our patch sponsor for this show.  Cathi Wilson, our talented artist, came up with this wonderful artwork.  This show is opposite March Mania so we needed a catchy name too.

We already have 40 stalls reserved.  We have been discussing requiring the stalls to be prepaid but want to try to avoid taking money out of your pockets before the show.  So we urgently need you to reserve your stalls right away and if you find you are not coming, let us know ASAP so we can release those stalls.

We’ll be giving away circuit awards as well as high points and reserves.

We’re going to continue our “Pot Luck” dinner on Saturday night again as it was such a success last year.  Bring your favorite dish to share.  Last year’s dinner was beyond description and what a great time we all had.  Remember the Boot Race?  We’ll let the kids decide on a fun event but all the adults enjoyed watching the boot race last year.

Be sure and get your memberships in if you are going for end of the year awards/money.  Your points only count from the date you join.  We also encourage you to join even if you aren’t going for year-end awards.  Membership dues help us promote Paint Horses in Florida.

Need a Hotel Room?  Many of our exhibitors stay at the La Quinta Inn in Gainesville located just on the east side of I-75. You can call them at  (352) 332-6466.  The Canterbury facility rate is $63 per night.
