The requirements for eligibility for Paint high point are on every single show bill and on our website (www.dixiephc.com) under By-Laws and Standing Rules. Please remember that at our Paint shows, our standing rules require that in order to win a high point or reserve high point, an exhibitor “Must show in category halter and one category riding class to be eligible for division high point award”. This is a standing rule has been in effect for every single show since the January show of 2006. To change such a rule would require a majority vote of the DPHC board.

At our Membership meeting on Friday those in attendance voted to move forward with the November 20-21 show at the Tampa Fairgrounds. That’s going to be a single fee show. We’re not sure what that single fee will be as we have to tweak the figures but exhibitors will pay the single fee or if you only go in a couple classes, you will be charged whichever is less. Call it affordable practice for the December show in Canterbury! We are making plans for various activities since we will have a shorter show bill and will keep you posted. Got anything you want to suggest? Just let us know. We aim to please.

Happy Trails!!

Our next show on September 11-12 will be dedicated to those that were victims of the 9-11 tragedy in New York and our men and women that are serving in our armed forces today. The proceeds from our Chinese Auction will got to one or both of the programs we have found that support “Horses for Hero’s” here in Florida. The patches for the show came in yesterday and they are fabulous. Donna and Bob Broome, our patch sponsor, will be so proud.

The weather even cooperated.  Lots and lots of our great Florida sun and although we started out cold in the early AM, by mid day people were in tank tops.

So now onto the next show!
Our next show that will count toward our year end points will be in Tampa, April 10th & 11th, 2010, at the Florida State Fairgrounds. The show is put on by the Florida Pinto Horse Association and supported by DPHC.
For stall reservations contact Barbara Lamphere at barbara.lamphere@att.net , or call 813-971-7143.  Be sure and visit their website for more information and a show bill www.ftpha.com
FPtHA is sponsoring the patch for the April Show.  The Florida Pinto Association title for the April show is “Spring Fling” and here’s the artwork. What a beautiful patch it will be!
Pinto would also like to invite everyone to their general membership meeting that will be held on Saturday 4-10-10 under the Pavilion at 5:00 PM or 30 minutes after the conclusion of the show.  Also, don’t forget to get your Pinto memberships in.  You’ll get a free “T-Shirt” when you join Pinto!!!!

We have sponsors lined up for May – the May Mane Event will be sponsored by Sabrina San Filippo.  September will be sponsored by Bob and Donna Broome and the theme will be patriotic. We have one person thinking about a sponsorship and they are partial to sea horses and we can handle that.  That leaves two shows that need sponsors.  Don’t be timid.  Call me if you are interested.  The patches are really catching on.  Even our judges are asking for them!

Pinto has come up with another great idea for the April show that everyone is going to love.  Instead of ribbons, winners will be able to pick
up “cones” in the appropriate color (ribbons will still be available as well).  Just think…everyone will have enough cones to do their patterns!  No more soda cans, fly spray bottles or coffee cups as markers!

Thanks to everyone that participated with our Pot Luck Dinner.  The food was fabulous and here are a couple of pictures to prove it.  Jennifer Goldstein and I made sure there was plenty of meat and got ribs and chicken from the Newberry Bar BQ.  Jennifer and I can attest to the fact that when you ride, it’s hard to cook!   The jalapeño poppers that Bobby Matos’ husband grilled were a big hit as was the Taco bar done by Dubin farms.

Ruth Benfield made a generous donation to the club.  She gave us 16 beautiful Longaberger Baskets.   These baskets are all handmade here in the US and are considered collectables by many.  We’ll be finding a way to “repurpose” them so look for some unique gifts from our club.

Here are your Top Ten Winners 2010 March Magic DPHC Show.  Each winner got a visor or a hat that shouts out “DPHC TOP 10”.

September Show Recap:

This show sure lived up to its title….Paint Horse Shows Make Us Smile!!! (Even the horses smile at a DPHC Show!!!!) We have so many good things to share – it’s hard to know where to begin! The show this past weekend surpassed all our expectations. Attendance was up, entries were up and never have we all felt so much great and positive energy. The nearly 4 inches on rain on Friday night and rain again Saturday morning did not daunt our hearty competitors whose positive attitudes made it sunny at all times in the pen. A big thank you to Abbey Turner as the patch sponsor!!!

We had 880 total entries… Yes, you read that right, 880 entries!!! There were 513 Paint, 226 Pinto and 71 entries in our training classes. There were 13 in the Amateur Mare class, 20 in the Amateur Gelding class, 18 in Aged Geldings, 17 in Youth Geldings, 20 in our Overo class and 19 in the Tobiano class. We had 18 classes with 4 or more points.

We are so excited to have Amanda Sarbury and Tawny Cox representing the Dixie Paint Horse Club at the AjPHA Leadership Conference in Colorado Springs, October 1-3. We all look forward to what they will bring back to our DPHC youth here in Florida.

It will be cash again for end of the year awards$$$ Those in attendance at the annual membership meeting gave us their opinion that the year-end high point winners should once again receive “checks” so they can come to more horse shows.

We hope everyone is looking forward to the Pinto Paint Combined Show that will be held at the Florida State Fairgrounds on October 10-11 and Amanda Payne and Moriah Chandler who ride with Erica Richardson and Danika Farms are the sponsors for the beautiful Harvest Moon patch for this show.   This show is sponsored by the Florida Pinto Association and includes a full slate of DPHC/APHA approved classes and will count toward DPHC year-end awards. We are providing the patches and a BIG SURPRISE!!!

The Dixie Club will sponsor the Zone 9 show at the Canterbury Show on December 12 and 13. This will be the first Zone Show in Zone 9 in 4 years. Not only will this be a great fun show at a great facility, but our Zone 9 horses will be eligible for $3,000 Gelding Plus money provided by APHA. The distribution will be determined by the Zone committee. Horses are eligible for the incentive money in the zone in which their owner resides. The registered owner(s) of the horse must be a current member of APHA, in good standing.

May Show Recap:

We had a great turnout at the “Nuts for Paints” show in Tampa and had almost 500 entries. Once again, a big thank you to Michelle Tucker who sponsored our patches for this show. We couldn’t do it without our generous supporters.

The show was held in the big covered arena and the competition was wonderful.
- The judges were terrific!
- Our show staff was professional and personable!
- The facility and its management were accommodating and proficient.

One of the best aspects of showing is the new friends we make. We had several new competitors and hope they enjoyed the show as much as we enjoyed having them. Of course we also hope these new faces become a permanent fixture with us.

There were a couple of first timers at the show. One was Mr. Robert George, father to Katie and Price George. He took her gelding “That’s Charisma Talking” into a halter class and color class and they made quite a picture together.

The ice cold watermelon was a big hit at the show and we all want to thank Chelsea and Kim Griffith for bringing the watermelon and the ice to the show.

Carson Hillis and her Mom Alyssa were the recipients of the “50” award. Leslie Dentinger and her mother Cindy Stokes donated a basket of 50 summer goodies in honor their great horse Fifty and it was given to the mother daughter combination whose total ages were closest to “50”. Here’s a photo of Carson, her Mom Alyssa, our judge Pat Smith

Did you take any great photos at the show that you would be willing to share with us so we can post them on our website?
They can be funny or serious, posed or candid. Send us your best digital takes and we’ll post as many as we can.
Corsages for the Mothers were beautiful and much appreciated. A big thanks to Denna Craig and Shannon Cordero for the superb job they did designing and putting these corsages together.

Sorry about the confusion concerning a Club meeting. We put it on the show bill before we checked the by-laws. The current by-laws call for a meeting in September. In my humble opinion, September is too late for a meeting for the feedback that we want from you the members concerning the 2010 season. So when we do meet in September that is one of the changes in the by-laws I’d like to see. I would like to keep the terminology of two meetings per year but the dates of those meetings should be up to the current officers. Makes a lot more sense to me to have the meeting in May where there is less risk of canceling the show due to weather. Earlier in the year, you the members can voice your opinion about the schedule, the locations of the shows, the judges, the show bill, etc. So we will have that meeting in September as the by-laws stand now. But don’t worry, we will be soliciting your point of views on the various subjects via email.

Our next show will be a Paint/Pinto Combined Show September 12 and 13 and the Dixie Club will be the host club. At this past show we asked participants which facility they liked better, Ocala Equestrian Center or the Tampa Fairgrounds. It was unanimous that if the Tampa facility was available it was preferred by exhibitors because of the covered warm-up and more riding area available. Good news! Tampa is available for that weekend so we’ve booked it. So – September 12-13 – Combined Paint/Pinto – Florida State Fairgrounds.

April Show Recap:

The Combined Paint/Pinto show was wonderful. There were a grand total of 531 entries and everyone was so complimentary about how well everything went and what a great time they had.

We’re planning a parent/youth versatility event! We’re going to have the moms or dads help their youth exhibitor put on their chaps, saddle the horse, put on numbers, etc and see who can do it the fastest. We’re deep in discussions of how to make it hilarious and fun for everyone. We can’t wait!!! If you’re a youth without a parent at the show or your sibling has dibs on Mom, don’t worry – we have plenty of volunteer parents who would love to team up with you. There are several of us that started our show careers as “show moms”.

Every exhibitor (and then some) went home with a beautiful Easter Basket created by our wonderful members. Every type of basket you could think of was there. There was a great cookie basket with all kinds of cookie cutters, a cookie recipe books and all kinds of decorating stuff. I have a reliable source that says decorated cookies have already been produced. There were multiple baskets for children, dogs and horses, great baskets with picture frames, a wonderful gator basket, lots of gardening baskets, even a basket donated by the APHA Journal. Someone got a beautiful denim Harris jacket (donated by the Dixie Club) and there were many, many more. We had over 100 baskets to share. Thank you to all that participated!!! It really was great fun to receive such wonderful gifts and it showed off the creativity of our members. A huge “Thank You” to Gerri Lundergan who manned the table for two days and helped give out the baskets as well as Lee Kidd, the announcer. They teamed up to make sure every exhibitor and even little brothers and sisters went home with something.

The participants in the Easter bonnet contest made us all smile. Here’s a couple of pictures you will enjoy. For those that wondered what judge Deb Jarvis had to say to Price George about the hat he created; seems 11 year old Price cut out horse pictures from the Paint Horse Journal and pasted them on his fireman’s hat. The prominent picture on the hat was of a horse that belonged to the judge herself. She complimented him on his good taste and creativity.
Bobbie Matos and The Blues Sister were more than stylish in their matching bonnets.

March Show Recap:

How about those color classes! We had 9 horses go in the Tobiano Color Class and 15 in the Overo Color Class. With those numbers we could very well have a horse from Florida leading the nation in the color divisions. One thing for sure – that’s a class anyone can go in. With everyone’s help we can continue to put some big numbers out there! Please thank the folks we dubbed “noveros” that went in and added to the numbers.

But – more important than any number is the lighthearted and friendly atmosphere that was felt and enjoyed by everyone at the show. Every single one of our participants is responsible for that and we thank you profusely. It inspires your officers, board and show staff to continue to do everything in our power to keep things going in the right direction for you.

A huge thank you to all the folks that brought food to the “Pot Luck Dinner”, helped set it up and helped clean it up! Wow! The food was fantastic and there was certainly plenty of it. I don’t believe anyone could have left hungry.

The boot race was a favorite for everyone and here are a couple of photos for everyone to enjoy. I’m sending one to the APHA Journal folks. Here’s our winner Samantha Caffrey, holding her $50 winnings from the boot race taking a victory lap wheeled by Big Ed Dubin. A big “THANK YOU!” to all the folks that threw money in the pot and provided gift certificates to make the race more competitive. Every participant left with something!
